Happy 3-11 Day

Today marks the best day of the year that isn't called "Christmas." It's 3-11 Day, where 311 fans the world over celebrate the music of a band whose best music came out 12 years ago (I'm one of their biggest fans, I can say that) but who continues to produce solid albums and tour for more than half the year. If you've never heard 311, you're either a) out of the loop or b) not the intended audience. If you have and only know "Amber" or "Love Song," well...they have a dozen albums you need to hear to exterminate the horror of that earrape. That said, here are three of my personal favorites:

This one's called "Hydroponic" and it's one of their oldest songs. It's an homage to the practice of soilless gardening, although I'm not really sure how big of botanists the guys really are. What do they grow, roses? Tobacco? What does this mean? The world may never know.

Here's the live performance of one of their more famous songs, "All Mixed Up." This was from the 3-11 Day 2006 show (they have them every other year in New Orleans) and it has a cool bridge deal that's live-exclusive. I was at this show, which was held in Memphis because of Katrina's little stop-in the year before. The concert went for five hours and we all got contact highs. Good times.

311 covering Led Zeppelin. My 18-year-old brain exploded all over the place when I first saw this.

You'll get one more 311 post from me in 2009 after this novella. You have my word.

Happy 3-11 Day everyone!

Ryan,3-11 is cool, couple of comments:

1. Hydroponic question - Glad you asked: What does this mean? It's ancient Japanese kanji, made popular in the late 1960's. There is no simple English translation for it but the concept is - "one who has only three brain cells remaining but only two work in harmony at any given time".
and
2. D'yer Maker - Robert Plant NEVER touched his crotch like that ganstah-style (2:15 mark) - he didn't need to, the women took care of that for him.
