Whatever happened to.....The Sears Christmas Wish Book

Ahhh it's November and Thanksgiving is just around the corner and of course growing up that meant the Sears Christmas Wish Book would be in the mail soon. Never in the history of man did a catalog mean so much than the Wish Book did to every kid growing up in the 80's. I would hustle past all of the clothing and home decor straight to the boys' toys and for days and days I would concentrate and debate what I would want for Christmas. I would circle a toy..then cut it out of the catalog and play with the paper version of it..because I couldn't wait to get it for Christmas.

However times they are a changing and today the Sears Christmas Wish Book is not exactly a book however a online book. I really can't get as psyched about a looking at toys on the internet ..so kids it looks like technology has screwed the pooch on this one. I'm sorry that your Christmas just won't be as good as ours. However I'm sure all you eight-year-olds only want a cell phone anyway.

There is only one toy today that shames us all..and that is playing with He-Man figures. How were we supposed to know he was a gay (not that there is anything wrong with that.) MOSS MAN!

Long before the days of the hard to get Tickle Me Elmo..the hardest toy to find was that of Optimus Prime. That's one thing I may never get over ... never getting the original Optimus Prime .. that still stings. It really meant that all of my other Transformers were useless with out him. Hold on...I need a minute.

I had that tent ... let me tell ya .. it got the ladies. When you see a Joe camping out in the front yard they come from all corners.

One staple of my childhood was getting a new jersey each year. I think I went with #11 from the Dallas team that year. However I never looked as good as those kids in the photo above. I think I ended up fashioning those shoulder pads into Legion of Doom (Road Warriors) shoulder pads later on.

Now this has what it has become...Virtual Catalog. The damn devil internet hate machine.

I think this is your best entry yet, for those of us that were born before 1980 anyways. I would look at the toys section for hours on end every day and check mark the ones I wanted (which usually ended up being about half of every page lol). I even remember seeing a new thing in the '84 or so catalog called a "compact disc player", I never did learn how that worked out for 'em. The Service Merchandise catalog was a great one, too.

Ah the good ol' days :)
